The Technology Geek is Moving!

The Technology Geek will shortly be moving!

What? Moving? What do you mean?

Having been hosted on Tumblr since its inception I’ve outgrown what I can do on here. Don’t get me wrong - I love tumblr (except when it goes down) , but I need more control to take this humble little blog where I want to take it!

Anyway, the upshot of all this is that I’ll shortly be moving its own hosted wordpress blog. The downside is that It will be a complete reset. I’ve tried various importers but all mangle the tumblog, so unfortunately the existing content won’t be coming over. It will however still be here at fxgeek.tumblr.com

The plan is to move over this weekend, so it’s possible there will be some downtime over the next few days as the servers re-align!

If you’re on theRSS feed you shouldn’t notice any difference as it goes through feed burner anyway.

Catch you on the other side !

In the sales war between the iPhone and Android, latest figures from the NPD group suggest that while iPhone sales are on the up, while sales of Android device have slumped preciptously.

Adrian Kingsly-Hughes demonstrates a shocking misunderstanding of what market share is.

He goes on to say:

Between Q3 2011 and October/November sales of iPhones soared from 26% to a whopping 43%. During the same period sales of Android devices fell from a high of 60% to 47%.

The figures he is referring to are those of market share, not actual sales. The figures don’t show a sales decline in Android at all, but rather a decline in Android’s market share. In other words, it is quite possible to loose market share while still having an increase in sales.

Android is likely still selling well, it’s just that Apple sold better. It’s quite shocking that someone on a high profile website would make such a basic mistake like this.

I’m really surprised this made it past the editors of ZDNet.

One thing we are sure of is Galaxy S phones, which include several phone models sold in 2010 and much of 2011, will be permanently stuck on the year old version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Lightroom 4 Public Beta: What's New

Netflix launches In the UK & Ireland today. The company is offering a 30 day free trial and you can sign up now.

I had a quick look around the site and the selection of movies and tv shows on offer seems fairly broad, but most are back titles. There doesn’t seem to be any new releases, and many TV shows only have older series. If you have a PS3 a Netfix application is now available on the XMBC. There is no sign of the iPad app on the Irish App Store yet, but given that it is mentioned several times during the sign up process I suspect it will be forthcoming.

[update] The iPad App is now available too

Samsung pushes SwipeIt media sharing app, AirPlay competitor to Smart TVs

A somewhat ironic name for Samsung’s Air Play clone.

To be fair though, I don’t think this is as much like Air Play as people think. Air Play is a system level function on iOS while this appears to be an app. Part of Air Play’s appeal is that it is system level.

Still, given Samsung’s penchant for shamelessly robbing every Idea Apple has, the comparisons are inevitable.

The company (Samsung) is believed to have achieved 25 percent sequential growth in smartphone shipments to reach a record 35 million units in the last quarter of 2011.

35 Million, also the number of models of Smartphone Samsung has on the market.
